Between Us

Bill T. Jones - Between Us

An evolving selection of classic works collected in an intimate evening of dance and theater. Between Us offers entry into rarely available pieces from the company's repertory created over a decade-long span beginning in the late '80s. The program focuses on simple, beautiful dances-many duets-that continue to be relevant and intriguing portraits of the bond between two people. Restaged in many cases for the first time, these dances contrast the expansive theatrical works the company is known for.

Fondly Do We Hope... Fervently Do We Pray

Bill T. Jones - Fondly Do We Hope... Fervently Do We Pray Continuing this tradition of challenging, thought provoking work, Mr. Jones is creating a new evening-length work about Abraham Lincoln Fondly Do We Hope... Fervently Do We Pray. Commissioned by the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois, Fondly Do We Hope... Fervently Do We Pray will find Mr. Jones "leading with his own heart," seeking a way to articulate if not reconcile the view of Lincoln he had as a young boy growing up during the civil rights struggle and as a mid-life liberal artist who "has very few heroes." The most ambitious project in the Company's 25 year history, Fondly Do We Hope... Fervently Do We Pray will investigate the myriad meanings of Lincoln, rejecting accepted truth in favor of challenging (and celebrating) the lasting contributions of this great man.

Serenade/The Proposition

Bill T. Jones - Serenade/The Proposition The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company launches its 25th Anniversary celebration with a new piece. Serenade/The Proposition explores the passage of time and the unique moral conflicts America has struggled with since its founding, through the use of movement, plainsong, and text. Our connection to history is evoked with stunning video by Janet Wong and an original score blending classical and folk music in a contemporary pastiche by electric cellist Chris Lancaster, Juilliard's Jerome Begin on piano and text performed in plainsong style by soprano Lisa Komara. Serenade/The Proposition transports the viewer through time with its iconic set design by Bjorn Amelan, Jones' cast of fierce dancers, actor Andrea Smith - and - completing the longtime collaborative team, lighting designed by Robert Wierzel and costumes by Liz Prince.

◊ Dancing in a House Divided
June 8, 2010

Slightly jet-lagged and certainly disoriented by a two hours drive thru a sun-blasted landscape - checkpoints and roadwork, fields spotted with workers, scattershot clusters of houses and errant donkeys - several dancers, my company's Associate Artistic Director and I finally arrived in the Palestinian town of Jenin.
