Serenade/The Proposition

Serenade/The Proposition

The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company launches its 25th Anniversary celebration with a new piece.

Serenade/The Proposition approaches the legacy of Abraham Lincoln as a rumination on the nature of history. On the eve of the Bicentennial of Lincoln's birth, some of his documented words, his contemporary's writings and speeches, and other texts are used to set up the push and pull of historical perspective.

Our connection to history - or lack thereof - is evoked through video by Janet Wong, an original score blending  classical and folk music in a contemporary pastiche by electric cellist Chris Lancaster, Juilliard's Jerome Begin on piano and text sung by soprano Lisa Komara.

Serenade/The Proposition transports the viewer through time with its iconic set design by Bjorn Amelan, Jones' cast of fierce dancers, actor Jamyl Dobson, and,  completing the longtime collaborative team, lighting design by Robert Wierzel, costumes by Liz Prince and sound design by Sam Crawford.

◊ Happy New Year!
January 6, 2010

...I quoted what the young Rabbi said at the memorial for Arnie Zane in April of 1988: "The day is long, the work is great, we're not obliged to finish the task, but neither are we allowed to ignore it." This was a condolence to family and friends as we honored a young, talented man whose life had abruptly ended.
